About CalculateGravel

CalculateGravel is a free, accurate gravel and aggregate calculator for homeowners, DIYers, and contractors — built by people who've actually ordered gravel.

CalculateGravel started with a simple frustration: every existing gravel calculator required clicking a "Calculate" button, then output a single number with no context. We wanted something that updated as you typed, gave you tonnage and yardage and bag-counts side-by-side, and explained what the math actually was so you could trust it.

What we built

  • A flagship calculator that handles every common shape, every common material, and every unit a homeowner or contractor will see on a quote.
  • 20 project-specific and material-specific calculators with the right defaults pre-set for driveways, patios, paver bases, French drains, aquariums, and the stone grades suppliers actually quote in (#57, ¾", crusher run, 21AA).
  • A pillar guide and a library of supporting articles that explain the underlying math and the practical decisions you face on the job.
  • A methodology page that publishes our exact formulas and density assumptions, so anyone can independently verify our numbers.

How we keep this honest

Density values come from quarry-published spec sheets averaged across multiple regions, with the typical range visible in the calculator's tooltip. The 10% waste buffer is the standard residential practice across the trade. We update both as better data becomes available and we link directly to authoritative sources where relevant.

CalculateGravel is an independent project — we're not owned by a quarry or a construction-products brand. The tool is free to use and free of tracking by default.

Editorial standards

  • Source-backed data. Every density and depth recommendation references an industry standard (ASTM D2940, ASTM D448, AASHTO M43, USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries, ACI 211.1) or a published quarry spec sheet. The full citation list is on the methodology page.
  • Practitioner review. Project-specific guides are reviewed by people who've done the relevant work — landscapers for landscape calculators, contractors for driveway and shed calculators.
  • Dated content. Every guide displays its last review date. We review pricing-sensitive content annually and technical content every 18 months.
  • Corrections welcome. If you spot an error — a wrong density, an outdated spec, a calculation that doesn't match your supplier's — email press@calculategravel.com. We respond to corrections faster than to anything else.
  • No paid placements. We don't accept money to recommend specific suppliers, brands, or products. Where we mention a brand (Vulcan, Martin Marietta, Quikrete, etc.), it's for accuracy, not promotion.

Who's behind it

CalculateGravel is built and maintained by a small editorial team with backgrounds in construction, landscape design, and software engineering. Project-specific guidance is reviewed by practitioners with hands-on experience in the relevant trade.
